Calabasas Relay for Life

Charity in Calabasas

By: Kenny Melcombe

Saturday, December 10, 2011 at the Calabasas Commons marked the kickoff of the 2012 Calabasas Relay For Life in part with the American Cancer Society. We had a great turn out by the community as well as the fantastic sponsors for the day from the Commons.

The event started out with a scavenger hunt around the commons where teams started with a clue and checked various places around the commons. After the event, everyone met up in front of Marmalade Café for a bite to eat where we had a brief talk sharing what Relay For Life is about, how to start a team, how to fundraise, and all the particulars. A big thank you to restaurants at the Commons including La Salsa, Marmalade, Le Pain Quotidien, Crumbs, Ralphs. Food was terrific especially the soup from Le Pain Quotidien.

Great Event…Pre Event for the big Relay happening in May 2012.

CSUN Rec Center Opens

By: Kenny Melcombe

Cal State University Northridge is just about to have the grand opening for the student rec center. The past friday I had the opportunity to attend the Pre-Opening Dress Rehearsal. In a few words, it was better then I had anticipated. It was amazing!

This is a state of the art center including a rock wall, basket ball courts, racquetball, indoor track, swimming pool, yoga studio, group exercise room, on top of the typical weight rooms, and fitness cardio rooms with eliptical, spin bikes, treadmills. Though typical is not the word to use… including 3 separate weight rooms and cardio equipment that can monitor your workout. Speaking of Technology–the SRC is striving for a LEED Gold Status and was designed to use the energy created by the bikes, treadmills, elipitical machines to power the entire building.

My friday workout consisted of climbing the rock wall, running the track and the treadmill, biking 12 miles, using the weight room, and ending with a swim in the beautiful pool. I can truly say this was the best time I have had working out and look forward to keeping in shape at the SRC.

The Grand Opening will be Thursday. Come get your memberships and get in shape. Or, by the way, If you join the Alumni Association you can get a significant discount on the membership. To join the Alumni Association click this link: https://www.csunalumni.com/default.aspx?page=Membership

The SRC features state-of–the-art weight and fitness zones, a rock wall, locker rooms, a 3-court gymnasium, a multi-activity court, fitness and group exercise studios, a racquetball court, an indoor track and recreational/lap swimming pool.

The SRC will have 3 different fitness zones that will be equipped with resources to help you achieve your fitness goals.

Inside the SRC will be 3 studios dedicated to Group Exercise and Fitness Training.

A multi-purpose studio where Zumba®, Step 360®, kickboxing, muscle conditioning, belly-dancing, hip-hop, boot-camp and many more group exercise classes will be held. This studio, when not being utilized for classes, will also be available for individual use and private training.

This studio will have specific equipment that will be utilized for classes such as; Spinning®, yoga, and pilates. Group and private mat, reformer and chair Pilates training will be available.

Determination Studio
A specialized studio equipped with TRX® and boxing equipment. This equipment and studio will be available during supervised open recreation times and scheduled classes.

INDOOR JOGGING TRACK

The SRC contains an indoor jogging track that is 1/8 mile long so you can enjoy your run in a climate-controlled environment, protected from the San Fernando Valley sun. The track’s superior biomechanical design allows for consistent traction with a cushioned surface providing greater safety and comfort.

Come test your limits and see if you’ve got what it takes to make it to the top of the 44-foot Ridge — Rock Climbing Wall!

The SRC has two pools available for your aquatic adventures. The Rec Pool is located at the SRC and the Plaza Pool is located adjacent to Subway in the University Student Union Plaza. The Rec Pool is available for both recreational and lap swimming. A large deck with furniture is also available for those that would like to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The Plaza Pool is programmed for lap swimming and special events but also has deck chairs available for those that would like to kick back in the sun for a bit. Ron Viola kills it!

Billy and the Beaters performed live last weekend @ Harper’s Bar & Grill. It was simply fantastic to see a band from 80′s still sounding amazing. They are the same band from back in the day, including one of the fabulous saxophone players, Ron Viola, who is  also one of the fine Realtor-Associate’s I work with at Sotheby’s in Sherman Oaks.

They played all their hit oldies including the worldwide number 1 Hit…”At this Moment.” You know, it makes me wonder, what would I give at this moment?

They don’t miss a beat, these guys are fabulous. Another 5 star event.

Fire up Calabasascalabasas relay for life

You have been hearing the buzz all through the city and this weekend it is finally here. The Calabasas Relay For Life isn’t just for kids, students, or people that have cancer, it’s for everyone who has a genuine interest in being outside and enjoying a day with friends and family. Not to mention, it’s a tremendous way to help the American Cancer Society.

From your first step to your last step, your participation in Relay For Life is nothing short of life changing. It may sound a bit over stated but come and see. The funds raised help The American Cancer Society find a cure through research, education, advocacy, and patient services. And it isn’t all about raising money; it’s about awareness as well. Awareness about all of the above and more over what you can do to help you, your family and loved ones from ever hearing those words, ‘You have cancer!’

I invite you again to come, participate, listen during the Opening Ceremonies, Luminaria Ceremony and Closing Ceremony. Listen and discover what can help eliminate Cancer at 10:30am with the Chef and the Dietitian, And the Doctor, speaking in the FIGHT BACK TENT. Go around to the campsites, Survivor tent, and Fight Back tent and get information, ask questions.

Celebrate the survivors. Remember, the ones that have past and Fight Back and make a difference. Also, enjoy the fun activities, live music and celebrate life. If nothing else come get to know your neighbors.

We hope to see you there.

You may get inspired and learn something this weekend that will help a loved one save their life. Lastly, every single donation counts. If you would like to make a donation and or get more information about the event, please go to the link www.relayforlife.org/calabasasca

The Nataline Sarkisyan Foundation

Nataline Sarkisyannatalie sarkisyan

Many know the Nataline Sarkisyan Foundation was created in hopes of one day honoring Nataline with the fashion show she always wished to hold. A Leukemia victim, Nataline lost her chance to continue fighting the disease after CIGNA denied her coverage. I used to work with Nataline’s mom at Prudential California Realty years ago.  With their work they have done for insurance reform, I hope that sharing their story will save more lives in the future.

In her memory, Nataline’s fashion dream lives on through a fundraising event that takes place every July. This fundraising event is coming to Calabasas at Mercedes-Benz Show room on July 9th. Do not miss it.

Nataline your dream wont be forgotten!

Borderline Bar and Grill

Doors plan to re-open again in December…

By: Kenny Melcombe

Borderline Bar and Grill

Borderline Bar and Grill

Share/Bookmark

For years Borderline Bar & Grill has had roof leaks.  The owner of Borderline for the last two years has been negotiating with the building landlord to replace the roof.  Seasons change, rain falls and the Health Department pays their yearly visit.  This year the leaks in the roof were so out of control that Borderlines permit to operate was suspended until the repairs are made.

As of two weeks ago an agreement was struck between landlord and tenant and new roof will be replaced in the next couple of weeks, weather permitting.  And there is more.  Besides the new roof there will also be some other upgrades to the club.  Carpet will be the most noticed change though outside of that there will be a few other remodeling modernizations to the interior.

If you haven’t been to Borderline, it is the place to be in the Conejo Valley.  Beside’s the typical Bar and Grill Restaurant, Borderline hosts a meeting place for pool leagues, concerts and dancing.  Almost every night of the week, Borderline has a new look.

Borderline also offers West Coast Swing night on Mondays (just like dancing with the stars); Tuesday night is Salsa night, Wednesday night is college night, and Sunday night is well known for family night.   If you have ever wanted to learn to dance this is Conejo Valley’s dancing depot.  They have great instructors teaching classes almost nightly. Classes usually run from 6:30pm till 8pm followed by open dancing till closing.

Though while the Borderline is closed, some of the dance coaches have continued their normal dancing classes at temporary locations.  Cliff Housego, the schedule coordinator and instructor for Borderline, has booked a ballroom at the Westlake Hyatt for his West Coast Swing and Night Club two step classes on Monday nights.

So next month, come & visit The Borderline Bar & Grill—with a fresh new look when they re-open in December.
